Area Code "602" Details & History:
North American area code 602 is a state of Arizona telephone area code that covers most of the city of Phoenix. It was one of the original area codes established in October, 1947. It originally covered the entire state, but in the 1990s the state was split into two area codes. This split was due in part to an increase in population, but was due also to the demand for telephone lines created by the proliferation of facsimile machines and dial-up Internet connections. Many states introduced new area codes during this time period for much the same reason. 602 has 432 landlines and 202 wireless prefixes (exchanges) serviced by 34 carriers. It covers 2 counties, 469 ZIP codes, and 11 cities, including Phoenix, Glendale, Scottsdale, Laveen, Tempe, Paradise Valley, Mesa, Gilbert, and Peoria.
Counties served by this Area Code:
Maricopa and Pinal!
