Area code 347 is a New York City area code used as an overlay to area code 718 and area code 917. It is used in the boroughs of Brooklyn, Queens, the Bronx and Staten Island in New York City, as well as the Marble Hill and Inwood sections of Manhattan. Like most USA area codes, 347 is used for land lines, cell phones, pagers and mobile devices. The 347 area code became effective October 1, 1999. The fact that it was an overlay meant that telephone lines which previously had a 718 or 917 area code maintained their number, while the majority of new numbers in the area from that point on were assigned the 347 area code. The addition of 347 to New York City brings the number of area codes used there to five (212, 718, 917, 646 and 347).
